Video Completion Rate Calculator
Completion rate is the number every short-form algorithm actually optimizes for. This gives you completion, the share of your runtime the average viewer watched, and the hold rate past the opening seconds where most videos die.
Result
FormulaCompletion rate = (viewers who reached the end ÷ views) × 100
Worked example
84,000 views with 21,000 full watches is a 25 percent completion rate. An average watch time of 14.5 seconds on a 34 second video means the typical viewer saw 42.6 percent of it, 58,800 made it past 3 seconds for a 70 percent hold rate, and the video accumulated 338.3 hours of watch time.
What to watch for
On short-form feeds, anything above 20 percent completion is doing well and above 40 percent tends to get pushed hard. Longer videos structurally score lower, which is why cutting 40 seconds to 25 often beats rewriting the script.
The three second hold rate is where the money is. If you lose 40 percent of viewers before the hook lands, no amount of payoff at the end can rescue the distribution.
Rewatches can push completion above 100 percent on some platforms' reporting. That is not an error, it is a very strong signal, and those videos deserve immediate follow-ups in the same format.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good video completion rate?
It depends almost entirely on length. Short clips under 15 seconds routinely clear 50 percent, while a two minute video holding 20 percent is performing well. Compare only against your own videos of similar duration.
Should I make videos shorter to boost completion?
Only if the content genuinely fits. Trimming a good 60 second story to 20 seconds raises completion and destroys the point. Cut the dead air first, then decide whether the format is wrong.
