Engagement Rate Calculator

Engagement rate only means something once you say what it is divided by. This gives you both versions: rate by reach, which measures whether the content worked, and rate by followers, which measures whether your audience still cares.

Engagement rate by followers3.57%

FormulaEngagement rate by reach = ((likes + comments + saves and shares) ÷ reach) × 100. By followers, swap reach for follower count.

Worked example

A post reaching 9,600 of 24,000 followers with 620 likes, 48 comments, and 190 saves and shares has 858 interactions. That is 8.94 percent by reach and 3.58 percent by followers, with the post reaching 40 percent of the audience.

What to watch for

Rate by reach is the honest content metric. Rate by followers is the one brands quote in decks, and it structurally penalizes large accounts, so always label which one you are showing.

Weight saves and shares above likes when you are deciding what to make more of. A like is a reflex, a save is an intent to return, and platforms treat the second as a much stronger ranking signal.

Working benchmarks: roughly 1 to 3 percent by followers is respectable on most feeds, and small accounts routinely clear 5 percent simply because their audience is self-selected. Do not chase a number pulled from an account with a different size and niche.

Frequently asked questions

Which engagement rate formula should I use?

By reach when you are judging creative, because it controls for how many people the algorithm actually showed it to. By followers when you are comparing accounts or reporting to a client who thinks in audience size.

Do comments count more than likes?

For ranking, yes. Comments, saves, and shares all signal deeper intent than a like and are weighted more heavily by most feed algorithms. If you want reach, write posts that ask for a reply rather than an approval.
