Content Marketing ROI Calculator

Content ROI is awkward because the cost lands in one month and the return arrives over the following year. This models the full picture: what a piece cost to make, what it earns per month once it ranks, and how long it takes to pay you back.

ROI over the period1,580%
Monthly value generated$6,300
Payback period0.7 months
Total value over the period$75,600

FormulaROI = ((monthly visits × conversion rate × value per lead × months) - production cost) ÷ production cost × 100

Worked example

A $4,500 article pulling 1,800 monthly visits at a 2.5 percent lead rate and $140 per lead generates $6,300 a month. It pays for itself in 0.7 months and returns $75,600 over 12 months, a 1,580 percent ROI on the production cost.

What to watch for

The honest version of this calculation includes the months where the piece earned nothing. Most content takes three to six months to reach stable rankings, so a twelve month window that starts at publication overstates real ROI.

Cost must be fully loaded: writer, editor, design, subject matter expert time, and promotion. Counting only the freelance invoice is how content teams end up with ROI numbers nobody in finance believes.

Value per lead should come from your actual close rate times deal value, not from a marketing-qualified lead number someone invented. If you cannot defend the input, the output is theater.

Frequently asked questions

How long before content shows ROI?

For organic search, typically three to six months before rankings stabilize and often twelve before a piece reaches its ceiling. Anyone promising ROI in week two is measuring paid promotion, not content.

Should I count assisted conversions?

Yes, but separately and clearly labeled. Last-click undercounts content badly, since most articles influence rather than close. Report both numbers and let the reader see the range.
