Share of Voice Calculator

Share of voice is your slice of the total conversation in a category. I use it as a market position check: it tells you whether a flat mention count means you are stagnant or simply that the whole category went quiet.

Your numbers

Result

Share of voice11.05%
Competitor share of voice23.95%
Excess share of voice3.05%Positive means you are louder than your market share, which historically precedes growth.
Mentions needed to match the leader4,900

FormulaShare of voice = (your mentions ÷ total category mentions) × 100

Worked example

4,200 mentions in a category with 38,000 total is an 11.05 percent share of voice, against a leader at 23.95 percent. With 8 percent revenue market share, you are carrying 3.05 points of excess share of voice, and you would need 4,900 more mentions to draw level with the leader.

What to watch for

The excess share of voice idea, that share of voice above market share tends to precede share gain, is a long-standing planning heuristic rather than a law. Use it to argue for sustained investment, not to promise a specific growth number.

Define the mention set before you measure. Whether you include review sites, forums, and organic search impressions changes the answer by double digits, and the only defensible approach is holding the definition constant across periods.

Volume without sentiment is dangerous. A recall crisis produces beautiful share of voice. Always pair this number with a sentiment split before anyone celebrates.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a mention?

Whatever you define consistently: social posts, press articles, review site entries, branded search volume, or a blend. The absolute number matters less than measuring the same way every period.

Can I measure share of voice in paid search?

Yes, and it is cleaner there. Impression share is share of voice with a rigorous denominator supplied by the platform, which is why I trust it more than social listening tools for category tracking.
