Bounce Rate Calculator
Bounce rate is the share of sessions that ended without a second interaction. GA4 renamed the useful half of it engagement rate, but the diagnostic is the same: how many people arrived, looked, and left immediately.
Result
FormulaBounce rate = (single-page sessions ÷ total sessions) × 100. Engagement rate is the remainder.
Worked example
34,680 single-page sessions out of 68,000 is a 51 percent bounce rate and a 49 percent engagement rate. Getting bounce to a 45 percent target on the same traffic would keep 4,080 more sessions engaged, which is a landing page project, not a media buy.
What to watch for
Bounce rate is meaningless without page type context. A blog post that answers the question completely should have a high bounce rate, and punishing it for that leads to worse content and pointless pagination.
GA4's engagement rate is not the exact inverse of the old Universal Analytics bounce rate, because it counts a session as engaged after ten seconds, a conversion, or two page views. Do not compare the two eras directly.
The bounce rates worth acting on are on pages with a job: product pages, pricing, lead capture, and paid landing pages. Above roughly 70 percent on those, look at load time and message match before anything else.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good bounce rate?
Broadly, 40 to 60 percent is typical for content sites, lower for ecommerce category and product pages, and higher for single-purpose landing pages and reference content. Judge by page intent, not by a site-wide average.
Does bounce rate affect SEO rankings?
Not as a direct ranking factor. What matters is whether searchers find what they wanted, and a fast bounce back to the results page for a different result is a genuinely bad signal. Fix the underlying relevance, not the metric.
