Backlink Value Calculator

A link is worth the referral traffic it sends plus whatever ranking movement it contributes. Both halves are estimates, so this keeps them separate and visible rather than hiding a guess inside a single confident number.

Your numbers

Your own estimate of monthly organic value this link helps unlock. Set to 0 to value referral traffic only.

Result

Annual value of the link$10,416
Monthly referral value$468
Payback period1.4 months
First year return on cost768%

FormulaAnnual link value = (monthly referral value + estimated monthly ranking uplift) × 12, where referral value = visits × conversion rate × value per conversion

Worked example

A link costing $1,200 sending 90 monthly referral visits at a 2 percent conversion rate and $260 per conversion produces $468 a month in referral value. Adding a $400 estimated ranking uplift gives $868 a month, $10,416 a year, paying back in 1.4 months for a 768 percent first year return.

What to watch for

The ranking uplift input is the weakest link in this chain, and I would rather you set it to zero and see whether the referral traffic alone justifies the spend. If a link only pencils out on the strength of an assumed ranking effect, be honest that you are guessing.

Links are not annuities. Pages get pruned, sites get redesigned, and links get removed. Discount the multi-year value heavily, and never model a link as permanent.

Paying for links carries real policy risk with search engines, quite apart from the economics. The cost input here should usually represent outreach, content, and PR time rather than a payment for placement.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a backlink worth?

It ranges from nothing to thousands, driven almost entirely by whether the linking page has real traffic and topical relevance. A link from a page nobody visits on a site unrelated to yours is worth close to zero regardless of its domain authority score.

Should I pay for backlinks?

I do not recommend it. Paid placements violate search engine guidelines and the risk lands on your domain, not the seller's. Spend the same budget on content and digital PR that earns links people would have given you anyway.
