Keyword Traffic Estimator

Before I commit a team to a keyword I want to know what winning it is actually worth. This turns search volume and a target position into an estimated click, conversion, and revenue figure so the effort has a number attached.

Your numbers

Roughly 27 for position 1, 15 for 2, 11 for 3, 9 for 4, and low single digits below 6.

Result

Estimated monthly clicks1,080
Estimated monthly conversions23.8
Estimated monthly revenue$6,178
Estimated annual revenue$74,131

FormulaEstimated clicks = search volume × CTR at target position. Revenue = clicks × conversion rate × value per conversion.

Worked example

A keyword with 12,000 monthly searches, ranked at position four with a 9 percent CTR, brings about 1,080 clicks. At a 2.2 percent conversion rate that is 23.8 conversions worth $260 each, roughly $6,178 a month or $74,131 a year.

What to watch for

Position CTR curves have flattened as SERPs fill with ads, featured snippets, and AI overviews. The old numbers where position one took 30 percent or more no longer hold on commercial queries, so estimate conservatively.

Search volume from any tool is an estimate with meaningful error bars, often smoothed over twelve months. For seasonal terms it can be off by a wide margin in any single month.

I care more about the intent tier than the volume. A 400 volume keyword where the searcher is comparing vendors is usually worth more than a 12,000 volume informational term, and this calculator will happily flatter the wrong one if you feed it a generic conversion rate.

Frequently asked questions

What CTR should I assume for position one?

Somewhere in the mid twenties as a working figure for a clean SERP, and materially lower on commercial queries loaded with ads and rich results. Where you have Search Console data for similar terms, use your own numbers instead.

Why is my actual traffic lower than the estimate?

Usually SERP features eating clicks, a volume estimate that was optimistic, or a page ranking for the head term but not the long tail around it. Check Search Console impressions against the tool volume before you conclude the estimate was wrong.
