Email List Growth Rate Calculator
Gross signups flatter everyone. What matters is net growth after unsubscribes and hard bounces, because that is the audience you actually get to mail next month. This projects the compounding effect forward.
Result
FormulaNet growth rate = ((new subscribers - unsubscribes - bounces) ÷ current list size) × 100, compounded over the projection period
Worked example
A 42,000 person list adding 2,100 subscribers while losing 520 unsubscribes and 310 cleaned addresses nets 1,270 people, a 3.02 percent monthly growth rate. Held steady for 12 months that compounds to roughly 60,000 subscribers.
What to watch for
Most lists shed 25 to 30 percent of their addresses a year through churn, job changes, and cleaning. If your acquisition rate does not clear that, you are running to stand still.
Growth rate without an engagement filter is vanity. I would rather see 1.5 percent net growth on a list where 40 percent open than 5 percent growth fed by a giveaway that nobody remembers entering.
The compounding projection assumes a constant rate, which never holds for long. Treat the twelve month number as a planning ceiling, not a forecast.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good list growth rate?
Anything comfortably above your churn rate. For most opt-in lists that means 2 to 4 percent net per month. Early stage lists post much higher percentages simply because the denominator is small.
Should I count unengaged subscribers in my list size?
Count them for growth math, but exclude them from your sending segments. Mailing people who have ignored you for six months is the fastest way to lose inbox placement for everyone else.
