Unsubscribe Rate Calculator
A single campaign's unsubscribe rate looks harmless. Multiply it by your send frequency across a year and it stops looking harmless, which is the calculation most teams never run.
Result
FormulaUnsubscribe rate = (unsubscribes ÷ emails delivered) × 100
Worked example
105 unsubscribes on 42,000 delivered is 0.25 percent, which reads as nothing. At six sends a month, that same rate compounds to roughly 16 percent of the list gone in a year from unsubscribes alone, before bounces or silent disengagement.
What to watch for
Under 0.2 percent per send is healthy for a permission list. Between 0.2 and 0.5 percent is worth watching. Above 0.5 percent means the content, the cadence, or the acquisition source is wrong.
An unsubscribe is a better outcome than a spam complaint. Never bury the link or add friction to it, because a complaint damages inbox placement for the entire list while an unsubscribe only removes one person.
A spike after a specific campaign is a message problem. A slow rise across all campaigns is a cadence or relevance problem, and the fix is segmentation or a preference center rather than better copy.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal unsubscribe rate?
Under 0.2 percent per send on an opt-in list is normal. First sends to newly acquired subscribers and re-engagement campaigns to cold segments will run much higher, and that is by design.
Should I offer a frequency option instead of unsubscribe?
Yes. A preference center that lets someone drop to monthly recovers a meaningful share of people who would otherwise leave entirely. Just do not make it a maze, or you convert unsubscribes into complaints.
