Discount Impact Calculator
A discount is not a marketing cost, it is a direct deduction from gross profit, and the volume needed to recover it is almost always larger than people assume. This calculator shows exactly how much larger.
Result
FormulaDiscounted price = price × (1 − discount %). Break-even volume = original units × original profit per unit ÷ discounted profit per unit
Worked example
A $100 product costing $45 earns $55 a unit at a 55 percent margin. Discount it 20 percent and the price is $80, profit per unit falls to $35, and margin drops to 43.8 percent. To make the same gross profit as 1,000 full-price units you would need to sell roughly 571 additional units, a 57 percent volume increase from a 20 percent discount.
What to watch for
The lower your starting margin, the more brutal this gets. At a 30 percent margin, a 20 percent discount requires more than triple the volume to stand still, which is why thin-margin retailers should almost never run blanket sitewide sales.
Discounts also train behaviour. If you run a promotion every month, your best customers simply wait, and you end up paying a permanent discount on demand you would have captured at full price anyway.
Where discounting does earn its place is acquiring a first purchase in a business with genuine repeat rates. A first-order discount priced against lifetime value is an acquisition investment. The same discount on a one-time purchase is just lost margin.
Frequently asked questions
Is a discount better than free shipping?
Usually free shipping, because it removes a specific friction rather than devaluing the product, and it often costs you less per order than an equivalent percentage off. It also protects the perceived price of the item itself.
How do I discount without damaging the brand?
Attach a reason and a deadline. Bundles, seasonal end-of-line clearance and loyalty rewards all give the price cut a story, while a permanent banner offering 20 percent off simply resets what customers believe your product is worth.
