Average Order Value Calculator
AOV is the cheapest growth lever most stores have, because it costs nothing in extra traffic. Enter revenue and orders to get your current figure, then set a target and see what the same customers would be worth.
Result
FormulaAOV = total revenue ÷ number of orders
Worked example
$145,000 across 1,200 orders gives an AOV of $120.83. Lifting it to $140 on the same order count would produce $168,000, an extra $23,000 with zero additional traffic. Put another way, at $140 you would only need 1,036 orders to hold today's revenue.
What to watch for
The three levers that actually move AOV are bundles, tiered free shipping thresholds and a genuinely relevant post-purchase upsell. Product page cross-sells usually move it least, despite getting most of the attention.
Judge AOV alongside conversion rate, never alone. Pushing customers toward larger carts can suppress the number of people who buy at all, and a store can lift AOV 15 percent while losing revenue.
Segment AOV by new versus returning customers. Returning buyers typically spend more, so a big new-customer acquisition month drags blended AOV down even when nothing is wrong.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good average order value?
It is entirely category dependent, so the only benchmark worth tracking is your own trend. What matters is whether AOV multiplied by gross margin comfortably clears your customer acquisition cost.
Does a free shipping threshold really raise AOV?
Usually yes, when the threshold sits modestly above your current AOV rather than far above it. Set it too high and customers abandon instead of adding, which is why it is worth calculating the threshold rather than guessing at a round number.
