Pinterest Specs

Pinterest behaves more like a visual search engine than a social feed, so the specs matter less than the metadata attached to them. I treat the 2:3 standard Pin as the only ratio worth designing and spend the rest of the effort on titles, descriptions and Rich Pin markup.

Notes

Pinterest indexes text, so the description is a ranking surface rather than a caption. Write it as one or two natural sentences that contain the phrase a person would actually search, then stop. Keyword stuffing is visible to users and does not help, but a description with no topical language at all leaves the Pin undiscoverable.

Rich Pins are the highest return technical task on the platform. Adding Open Graph or schema.org product markup to your site and validating it once means price, availability and title sync automatically onto every Pin from that domain, including Pins other people save. That is free distribution maintenance you never have to touch again.

Pins have a long tail measured in months, not hours, which changes how you schedule. Publishing seasonal content roughly 30 to 45 days ahead is the widely used planning window because saves accumulate before the search peak arrives.

Pinterest updates format support and length limits without notice, and Idea Pin features in particular have shifted more than once. Verify against the Pinterest Business help centre before you build templates around an exact number.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use taller than 2:3 Pins?

You can upload them, but Pinterest truncates very long Pins in the feed and the tap through rate suffers. Stay at 2:3 unless you have a specific reason and are measuring the difference.

Do hashtags work on Pinterest?

They are supported but marginal. Descriptive natural language in the title and description does far more for discovery than hashtags do.
