LinkedIn Specs
LinkedIn is the platform where I see the most avoidable spec mistakes, mostly because people reuse Instagram assets and lose the bottom of every image to the card crop. These are the numbers I brief against for personal profiles and company pages.
| Asset | Aspect ratio | Recommended pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Feed image, landscape | 1.91:1 | 1200 x 627 |
| Feed image, square | 1:1 | 1080 x 1080 |
| Feed image, portrait | 4:5 | 1080 x 1350 |
| Personal profile photo | 1:1 | 400 x 400 |
| Personal background banner | 4:1 | 1584 x 396 |
| Company page logo | 1:1 | 300 x 300 |
| Company page banner | Wide | 1128 x 191 displayed |
| Format | Specification |
|---|---|
| Feed video ratios | 16:9, 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16 all supported |
| Recommended video resolution | 1080p, H.264 in MP4 |
| Practical video length | Under 90 seconds for feed performance |
| Document post file types | PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX |
| Document post page limit | Up to 300 pages |
| Document post aspect | Square or portrait reads best on mobile |
| Field | Limit |
|---|---|
| Feed post | 3,000 characters |
| Headline | 220 characters |

| Company page tagline | 120 characters |
| Comment | 1,250 characters |
Notes
Document posts (carousels) built as square or portrait PDFs are still one of the highest dwell time formats on the platform, because each swipe is a session extension. Build them at 1080 x 1350, one idea per page, and put the payoff on page two so people swipe.
The headline is the most valuable 220 characters on LinkedIn. It follows you into every comment, every search result and every notification. Write it as positioning, not as a job title, and put the specific thing you do before the company name.
Native video and documents outperform link posts on distribution, but the honest fix for link posts is not hiding the URL in the comments, it is writing a post that stands on its own and treating the link as optional. Comment links also fragment your analytics.
LinkedIn changes feed treatment more often than it changes documented specs. Verify current dimensions in LinkedIn's own help centre before building templates, especially for company page banners, which have been resized more than once.
Frequently asked questions
Does LinkedIn suppress posts with external links?
LinkedIn has said it does not penalize links outright, but link posts consistently reach fewer people in practice because they drive users off platform. Write the post to deliver value on its own, then link.
Portrait or landscape images on LinkedIn?
Portrait at 1080 x 1350 takes up more of a mobile screen and generally performs better. Landscape 1200 x 627 is right when the image is a wide diagram or a screenshot that would be unreadable cropped.
