Hashtag Limits by Platform
The limits are easy, the judgement is not. Hashtags have gone from a distribution mechanic to a topic signal on most platforms, and on some they now do nothing at all. Here are the hard caps alongside what I actually use.
| Platform | Maximum hashtags | What I use | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 per post | 3 to 5 | Topic signal, not reach driver | |
| TikTok | Limited by the 2,200 character caption | 3 to 5 | Helps categorisation and search |
| X (Twitter) | No hard cap, limited by post length | 0 to 2 | More than two reads as spam |
| No hard cap | 3 | Feeds topic following, low impact | |
| No hard cap | 0 to 2 | Minimal distribution effect | |
| YouTube | Up to 15 hashtags per description | 2 to 3 | First 3 show above the title |
| Supported in descriptions | 0 | Descriptive text outperforms tags |
Notes
Hashtags consume the same character budget as body copy on every platform, so a 30 tag block on Instagram is 200 or more characters spent on something that does not move reach much. Put them in the first comment if you want them, keep the caption clean.
Where hashtags still matter is categorisation rather than search. On TikTok and YouTube, a small number of accurate topical tags help the system place your content with the right audience early. On Instagram, that job has largely moved to on screen text, audio and caption language.
Branded hashtags remain useful for retrieval rather than discovery. A consistent campaign tag makes user generated content findable for your own team, which is a real operational win even when it adds no incremental reach.
Platforms have quietly changed both hashtag caps and how much weight they carry, including YouTube limits that trigger removal of all hashtags when exceeded. Verify against the platform help centre before you standardise a template.
Frequently asked questions
Do 30 hashtags on Instagram still work?
Not in my testing. It looks dated, eats the caption, and Instagram has said the caption text itself carries topical signal. Three to five accurate tags is the sensible default.
What happens if I exceed the YouTube hashtag limit?
YouTube can ignore all hashtags on the video rather than just the extra ones, and excessive tagging can trip policy enforcement. Stay well under the cap.
