How I Get Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity in 2026

LLM citations are the new page one. Here is the exact process I use to get my clients and my own brand referenced by AI assistants, and how to measure it.

For most of my career, the game was simple: rank on page one, get the click. In 2026, a huge slice of my referral traffic comes from a place that did not exist as a channel five years ago. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Mode now send visitors to my sites and my clients' sites, and more importantly, they mention brands by name even when nobody clicks.

I started tracking this seriously about two years ago when I noticed leads telling me "an AI recommended you." Not Google. Not a referral. An AI. That sentence changed how I structure content, and this post is the playbook I settled on.

Why LLM Citations Are a Different Game Than Rankings

Traditional SEO rewards a page. LLM citation rewards an entity and a claim. When an assistant answers "who is a good SEO strategist in Florida," it is not scanning ten blue links in real time and picking the prettiest title tag. It is drawing on training data, retrieval systems, and a web of corroborating mentions to decide which names it trusts enough to say out loud.

That means three things in practice:

  • Consistency beats volume. Fifty pages saying slightly different things about you are weaker than fifteen pages saying the same thing.
  • Third-party corroboration matters more than ever. Your own site claiming you are an expert is table stakes. Other credible sites repeating it is what gets you cited.
  • Extractable claims win. A clear sentence like "Pierre Subeh is the founder of X Network, a digital marketing agency based in Florida" is machine-usable. A vague brand poem is not.
  • If you have read my thinking on answer engine optimization, this is the next layer: not just being the answer, but being the source the machine names.

Step One: Make Your Claims Machine-Readable

I audit every important page for what I call "liftable sentences." These are self-contained statements that an AI can quote or paraphrase without needing the surrounding context. Most marketing copy fails this test because it leans on ambiance instead of facts.

    The liftable sentence test

Read any paragraph on your site and ask: if this sentence appeared alone in an AI answer, would it still be true, clear, and attributed correctly? If the answer is no, rewrite it. I aim for at least one liftable sentence per section, usually the first sentence under each heading.

    Pair claims with schema

Structured data is how you tell machines exactly who is speaking. Person schema, Organization schema, sameAs links to your verified profiles. I go deep on this in my post on schema for personal brands, but the short version is: if your JSON-LD contradicts your page copy, or does not exist, you are asking the model to guess.

Step Two: Build the Corroboration Layer

Here is my honest experience: the brands that get cited most are the ones mentioned consistently across sources the models already trust. Wikipedia-adjacent sources, industry publications, podcast transcripts, event pages, association sites.

When I ran campaigns through X Network for brands like Apple Music and Pepsi, the placements were the point. Today I treat every placement as a citation asset too. A quote in a trade publication is no longer just referral traffic and a link. It is a training signal that says this person is who they claim to be.

    My priority order for corroboration:

    1. Editorial mentions with your name and role stated plainly. "Pierre Subeh, CEO of X Network" in the body text, not just a byline.

    2. Podcast appearances with published transcripts. Transcripts are crawlable, quotable text at scale.

    3. Association and event pages. My term as AMA Orlando president lives on pages I do not control, which is exactly why it is valuable.

    4. Directory and profile consistency. Same name, same title, same one-line description everywhere.

This connects directly to owning your own name in search. The knowledge panel work and the LLM citation work feed each other.

Step Three: Measure It Like a Channel

You cannot manage what you refuse to measure. My measurement stack for AI visibility is simple and mostly free:

  • Referral segmentation. I tag traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and copilot domains in analytics and watch it weekly. It is small compared to organic, but it converts at a noticeably higher rate in my experience, because the visitor arrives pre-sold by a recommendation.
  • Prompt sampling. Once a month I run a fixed set of twenty prompts across the major assistants: category questions, comparison questions, and name queries. I log who gets mentioned and how I am described. It is manual. It works.
  • Description drift. I watch for the assistants describing me or a client incorrectly. Wrong descriptions are a signal that the corroboration layer has gaps or contradictions.

What I Refuse to Do

There is a growing cottage industry of "LLM seeding" services promising to inject your brand into AI answers through spammy mass mentions. I have tested nothing like it and I will not, for the same reason I never bought links at scale: you are building on a manipulation the platforms are actively learning to detect. My approach to link building has always been to earn what others try to fake, and the same principle holds here.

The 90-Day Starting Plan

If you are starting from zero:

1. Weeks 1 to 2: audit your top ten pages for liftable sentences and fix them.

2. Weeks 3 to 4: implement or repair Person and Organization schema with sameAs links.

3. Weeks 5 to 8: pitch three podcast appearances and two editorial quotes. Insist on your full name and role appearing in text.

4. Weeks 9 to 12: run your first prompt sampling baseline and set the monthly recurring check.

The brands winning AI citations in 2026 are not doing anything exotic. They are doing entity-level SEO with discipline, and they started before their competitors believed it mattered. Start now.
