The Question That's Being Asked Wrong
"Will AI replace human writers?" is the question dominating the content marketing conversation right now.
It's the wrong question. The useful question is: what can AI produce well, and what requires human capability that AI doesn't have?
Answering that question correctly produces a content strategy that uses AI where it's genuinely better and preserves human effort for where it's genuinely necessary. Getting the boundaries wrong in either direction is expensive — either spending human effort on work that AI could handle, or using AI for work that requires capabilities it doesn't have.
Where AI Generates Content Well
Templated, structured content. Product descriptions that follow a consistent format. FAQ entries with predictable structures. Metadata: title tags, meta descriptions, alt text at scale. Job descriptions. Boilerplate legal copy. Anything where the structure is fixed and the variables are discrete.
AI handles these better than human writers for volume work. The output is consistent, fast, and requires only light editing for brand voice.
First draft generation for editorial content. AI can produce a passable first draft of an editorial article on almost any topic. The draft will be accurate in its general claims, well-structured, and readable. It will not have the specific texture of genuine expertise — the first-hand case, the counterintuitive observation, the specific failure that taught you something.
As a starting point that a skilled human editor then develops with genuine knowledge and voice, AI drafts are useful. As finished content, they're identifiable to sophisticated readers and penalized by search algorithms increasingly tuned to detect average-knowledge synthesis.
Content repurposing and reformatting. Taking a long-form piece and extracting social posts, email teasers, or executive summaries. Taking a podcast transcript and producing a structured article. Taking a keynote outline and producing a blog post. AI handles these transformations well.
Research aggregation and synthesis. Pulling together what's known about a topic from multiple sources, identifying common themes, producing a structured overview. Useful as a research starting point. Not useful as a finished expert resource.
Where AI Consistently Falls Short
First-hand experience. This is the most critical gap. AI generates content from patterns in training data. It cannot generate content about something it has actually done. A blog post about "what I learned from running 14 SEO campaigns for healthcare brands" cannot be written by an AI that hasn't run those campaigns. The specific, textured, failure-adjacent observations that real experience produces are not in any training set.
This is the axis along which human content and AI content are most distinguishable — and it's the axis that Google is increasingly using to separate rankable from non-rankable content.
Original positions and genuine controversy. AI tends toward balance and consensus. It will present multiple perspectives on contested questions rather than taking a clear position. Human writers with genuine expertise take positions, disagree with consensus when they have reasons to, and say things that someone else in their field would push back on.
That friction — that specific, justified disagreement — is a signal of genuine thinking that AI rarely produces convincingly.
Domain-specific depth beyond training data. For most topics, AI's knowledge is average. It synthesizes what's widely written. For topics that require knowledge that exists in practice but not in published text — specific campaign mechanics that practitioners know but rarely write down, current market dynamics, emerging techniques that predate significant documentation — AI's knowledge is either absent or substantially outdated.
Voice and perspective. The most recognizable human writers have distinctive voices — specific rhythms, specific reference points, specific ways of framing problems that accumulate over time into a signature. AI-generated content has no stable voice across documents because there's no actual perspective behind it. Every piece is a synthesis of others, without a genuine first-person source.
The Search Engine Dimension
Google has been explicit that it evaluates content quality partly by whether it demonstrates genuine expertise, experience, and authority (E-E-A-T). The "experience" component — added explicitly in December 2022 — is specifically about first-hand knowledge.
What this means in practice: AI-generated content that covers a topic without demonstrating first-hand experience is at a structural disadvantage in search compared to content that contains specific first-hand observations. Google's systems are increasingly good at detecting the difference.
The sites that have lost significant organic traffic in recent major updates have disproportionately been those built on AI-generated or thin human-written content that lacks genuine expertise. The pattern is consistent with Google's stated direction.
This doesn't mean AI-assisted content can't rank. Content that uses AI for structural assistance, first drafts, or repurposing, and then layered with genuine expert editing and first-hand knowledge, can absolutely rank. The signal is whether genuine expertise is present, not whether AI was involved.
The Strategy for 2025
The content strategy I'm recommending for clients right now:
Use AI for the commodity layer. Metadata, templated product content, repurposing, FAQ entries, first drafts of lower-stakes content. This frees human editorial capacity for work that actually requires it.
Invest human expertise in the authority layer. Original research. In-depth expert guides. Case studies with genuine data. Posts that take positions. Content where first-hand knowledge is the primary value. This is where human effort has irreplaceable ROI.
Maintain clear human editorial oversight. Not because AI makes factual errors constantly (though it does make them occasionally) — but because the specific, genuine, surprising observation that makes a piece worth reading almost never appears in an unedited AI draft. Human editorial judgment is the process that produces content worth reading.
The brands trying to replace human editorial capacity entirely with AI are building content moats made of sand. The brands using AI to amplify human expertise — producing more, faster, without sacrificing the genuine knowledge layer — are building real durable advantage.
